German Bureaucracy: A Game That Starts on Hard

The game comes with side quests, puzzle rooms, document tetris, and the occasional plot twist that sends you right back to the beginning. Fair enough: that's the system by design.

Level 1. Survived Arrival

I moved to Berlin ten years ago. New language, tons of urgent tasks, and a mountain of documents to handle in a very short time: all while starting a new job with its own onboarding quests. Those first months felt like a nightmare.

I arrived with a small folder from Ukraine. By the end of Level 1, that humble folder had evolved into the classic German Ordner.

Achievement unlocked: I missed a €10 payment. A collection agency got involved and the total jumped to €60.

Level 2. Achieved Order

Life settled down. Papers got organized. The main recurring quest was the annual tax return. Since I'm married, my husband handled it. But here's the twist: I still ended up with so many documents that, despite my best effort, I couldn't always remember where that one specific paper lived.

Achievement unlocked: Discovered that "organized" and "findable" are not the same thing.

Level 3. Expanded the Family

Personal life changed: kids! When my first and later my second son were born, I had to register them in Berlin, apply for Elterngeld and Kindergeld, and get passports. Because I'm Ukrainian, there were extra quest items: translations and apostilles. All of this happened in the first month, between sleepless nights, figuring out what to write in each box in the forms, asking friends in group chats for advice, and hunting down documents to scan and upload.

And oh boy, when school starts, a fresh wave of to-dos and paperwork arrives just for the children.

Achievement unlocked: Learned that at the end of the day, no one can do it for you. Your form, your responsibility.

Level 4. Bought Property

Property (mortgage, car, etc.) doesn't appear in order. It can land whenever. For me, the mortgage happened between the two kids. Getting a bank loan meant collecting lots of documents. Buying a house is not a seamless process here; even people born in Germany find it… intense. You dig through family paperwork, and hope the checklist stops growing.

Achievement unlocked: Gained a bonus layer of bureaucracy. More bureaucracy → more applications (insurance, etc.) → more policies to manage.

Level 5. Became Self-Employed

This level is really hard, but after clearing Levels 3 and 4, you feel braver. Then the game throws new puzzles at you: unclear document requirements, the sudden need for professional advice, a huge volume of paperwork, and tight deadlines competing with your calendar.
